Why Finance Bariatric Surgery Procedures?

Even with diet, exercise, support and medication, some people simply cannot lose weight on their own. This is not a failing on their part, and it doesn’t necessarily mean the person is lazy, lacks self-control or simply doesn’t care about their appearance—their body simply retains calories in the form of fat faster than they can burn them. This added weight can impact self-esteem and social interaction, and over time can lead to more severe and even deadly problems such as sleep apnea, heart disease, diabetes and strokes, among others.

United Medical Credit offers bariatric surgery financing through our online lender network to help make losing weight more affordable than ever before. Many people are surprised to learn they don’t have to max out their credit card, risk the good standing of their checking accounts or take out a 401k loan to cover weight loss and bariatric surgeries.

UMC patient loans make financing your bariatric surgery easier and more affordable than you ever imagined. Our patient financing is a great solution for people who:

  • Have bad credit, student loans, a poor credit score or less than stellar credit history
  • Want to defray the typical costs of gastric sleeve surgeries and other options for weight loss procedures
  • Need to safeguard their personal finance goals, save money, protect their savings accounts or retirement nest eggs
  • Have had their bariatric procedure preapproval denied by their health insurance company
  • Want to bolster their credit with unsecured loans or a personal loan while paying for weight loss procedures which really work

At UMC, we don’t think your finances should be a barrier to the life you deserve. That’s why each of our medical loans are designed with a payment plan which fits your budget and lifestyle while still helping you achieve the weight loss you’ve always dreamed of. Helping You Manage the High Cost of Bariatric Treatments

As scientific understanding of the underlying causes of obesity increase, so does the popularity of medical intervention designed to help people eat less and force their bodies to use nutrients more efficiently. Surgical methodologies such as duodenal switch, gastric balloon, gastric banding or “lap band,” sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass are all options for patients who meet certain criteria and who cannot achieve a healthy weight through traditional modalities. But the cost of bariatric surgery can be high, with gastric banding costing an average of $14,500 and gastric sleeve a whopping $23,000—more than many new cars!

Many patients turn to medical tourism to combat the high weight loss surgery cost, traveling outside the US to obtain bariatric services at a reduced cost. However, this method comes with its own problems and risks, including having access to a passport, lack of post-surgical support and care once the patient returns home, arranging travel and other accommodations and a legion of other factors.

Because of these considerations, it’s not surprising many people decide not to have bariatric surgery. Some common excuses include:

  • It’s too expensive.
  • I’m worried about how I’ll look losing all that weight so fast.
  • I don’t want to have to leave the country to get the surgery done.
  • I can’t find a bariatric surgeon I trust.
  • My insurance company says my health plan won’t cover weight loss surgery.

Doesn’t My Health Insurance Company Cover Bariatric Treatments?

Health insurance is a wonderful thing, and it can offer a lot of peace of mind. However, insurance companies stay in business by restricting the services they pay for and limiting their financial obligations while spreading the risk among a large pool of customers. For these reasons, it’s not uncommon for insurance companies to refuse to pay some, all or any of the cost of bariatric surgery, leaving their customers on the hook for huge medical bills. Here are just some reasons insurance companies give for not covering weight loss procedures.

  • “It’s not medically necessary.”
  • “You don’t meet the criteria for this surgery at this time.” Ironically, oftentimes the criteria they expect to see, such as asthma, diabetes, sleep apnea or heart conditions, could be avoided altogether if the patient simply had the surgery.
  • “Your plan only covers specific types of bariatric surgery, which are not the one your physician believes would be most efficacious.”
  • “Your doctor hasn’t provided us all the documentation we require to verify you actually need this procedure.”
  • “Your policy only covers eighty percent of the procedure up to a preset limit, after which you’re on your own.”

At UMC, we think decisions about your care should be up to you and your physician, not an actuary or insurance underwriter. That’s why we offer bariatric surgery financing options to fit just about any budget or need. Click here to start your application and experience the UMC difference for yourself today!

FAQ

Q: Can you finance bariatric surgery?’

A: Yes! United Medical Credit offers gastric bypass financing, as well as loans to help defray the costs of other bariatric modalities and medical equipment, including but not limited to gastric balloon, gastric banding and other bariatric procedures.

Q: Can I buy insurance to cover bariatric surgery?

A: While it is technically possible to get insurance to cover bariatric surgery, if your employer’s group health plan doesn’t specifically include bariatric surgery and associated care as benefits, you will likely not be able to get an insurance company to cover it. Even if your carrier does offer bariatric benefits, there are a number of ways they may either deny your claim or reimburse you for far less than you expect. Ironically, it’s best not to pin your hopes for a healthier life on your health insurance provider.

Q: How do you qualify for the gastric sleeve?

A: Bariatric surgery of any kind is the culmination of a lengthy and often frustrating journey, involving a number of medical professionals and a lot of time preparing for weight loss. It’s not as simple as talking to your doctor and going to a clinic, unfortunately. And your weight is only one component in the overall picture.

To qualify for gastric sleeve or other bariatric surgery, you have to meet certain criteria.

  • You must have tried diet and exercise for an extended period under a physician’s care and guidance, often in tandem with a dietician, with minimal or no loss of weight.
  • You must have a Body Mass Index, or BMI, of 40 or above, or a BMI of 35 with comorbidities such as sleep apnea, diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure and heart issues which may be fatal if not addressed.
  • You must be at least age 14 and have completed puberty. Some states and insurance companies will not consider patients under age 18 for bariatric surgery, regardless of other factors or present comorbidities.
  • You must be psychologically prepared for the often-extreme physical changes associated with radical and drastic weight loss.

Q: How much do you have to weigh to get bariatric surgery?

A: Your weight is only part of the equation to determine whether you are a candidate for bariatric surgery. Your Body Mass Index, or BMI, is actually one of the key determining metrics. To calculate your BMI, take your weight in pounds divided by your height in inches squared, and then multiplying by 703, like this

(lbs/[in^2])*703 = your BMI

Once you know your BMI, you can talk to your doctor about whether bariatric surgery may be an option for you.
