How Long Will the Results of Cosmetic Surgery Last?
The permanence of any type of cosmetic surgery depends on many factors. In general, you will have the best results if you do not smoke, limit alcohol use, avoid direct sun exposure, eat well, exercise, and maintain your general health. If you follow these basic guidelines, you can count on 6-10 years minimum. Of course, you will still continue to age and your body will change, but 6-10 years down the line you will be that much better than you would have been without the surgery.
It is important to remember that cosmetic surgeries are not permanent fixes. In the case of liposuction, when fat deposits are removed, those fat cells are gone forever. The body’s contour is improved and the areas in questions are now more proportional to the rest of the body. However, there will always be some remaining fat cells in the area, as well as in other areas of the body. Therefore, if the patient continues to gain weight, the remaining fat cells will grow larger. Accordingly, you may find that you are now more prone to gaining weight in areas where you did not have the procedure, since these areas now contain proportionately more fat cells. Thus, while liposuction can improve your body proportions and contours, it is not an effective method of weight loss, and it certainly is not an alternative to eating healthy and exercising regularly.
